Winter opening days at the Champagne houses

The cellars stay at the same cool temperature all year, but the houses do not keep the same hours. From November several big names in Reims open fewer days, and a Tuesday can leave you with very little choice.

A Champagne day in winter works. The cellars are underground, the tasting rooms are heated, and the houses are quieter than in July. What changes is the calendar. Veuve Clicquot and Mumm both drop days from the end of October, and the gap between Christmas and mid January is patchy everywhere.

This post lists what each house has published for November 2026 to March 2027, as checked on 13 October 2026, and how that affects a train day or a tour from Paris.

The quick answer

From 30 October Veuve Clicquot opens Wednesday to Sunday only. Mumm opens Thursday to Monday from 1 November and Thursday to Saturday from 15 January to 28 February. Pommery opens every day except 25 December and 1 to 3 January. Moët & Chandon lists daily hours. Avoid Tuesdays for Reims, and treat 22 December to mid January as the gap. Tours from Paris keep running in winter and plan around the closed days.

Which Champagne houses change their opening days in winter 2026-27?

Veuve Clicquot and Mumm cut days from the end of October. Pommery and Moët & Chandon keep daily hours apart from holidays. Taittinger takes online bookings only.

These are the published schedules for the five houses most day-trippers ask about. Where a period is blank, the house has not put it online yet; check its booking calendar before you buy a train ticket.

When is Veuve Clicquot open in winter 2026?

From 30 October to 29 December 2026, Wednesday to Sunday, 09:30 to 17:30. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the dates after 29 December are not yet online.

The schedule comes from Reims Tourisme's page for the house, which links to Veuve Clicquot's own booking site. Until 27 October the house is open Tuesday to Sunday. Booking is through the house website, and we found no mention of walk-ins, so treat it as reservation only.

This matters for tours too. The private Moët and Veuve Clicquot day books Veuve Clicquot by name, so it can only run that visit on an open day. One guest on the private Veuve Clicquot half day was moved to Moët & Chandon because Veuve Clicquot changed its opening days. If the yellow label is the reason for your trip, book a Wednesday to Sunday in November or December and confirm with the house first.

What are Mumm's winter opening hours?

Thursday to Monday from 1 November to 21 December, then Thursday to Saturday from 15 January to 28 February. 22 December to 14 January is not listed.

Mumm's booking page gives 10:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 18:00 for November and December, and a shorter 10:30 to 17:30 day (same lunch break) in January and February. All three tours last 1 hour 30 minutes: Cordon Rouge with one glass, Pinot Noir Celebration and Vintage Grand Cru, both with two.

Late January and February are the tightest weeks in Reims. Mumm has three days a week, Veuve Clicquot's 2027 days are still unknown, and Pommery is the steady option. A Thursday, Friday or Saturday is the safe pick for a DIY day then.

Which days should you avoid for a winter visit to Reims?

Tuesdays, Christmas Day and 1 January. From November to late December, a Tuesday leaves Pommery and Taittinger in Reims, with both Mumm and Veuve Clicquot shut.

The table shows the two houses with reduced days next to Pommery and Moët, for 1 November to 21 December 2026. Moët is in Épernay, about 34 minutes from Reims by regional train.

Watch the holidays as well. Pommery is closed on 25 December and from 1 to 3 January. Mumm lists nothing between 22 December and 14 January. Plan a Champagne day for the week before Christmas or after mid January, not between the two.

Do Champagne tours from Paris still run in winter?

Yes. The six-glass small group lists daily departures all year, and the other day trips sell winter dates. The big-house stop is often "subject to availability".

The six-glass small group runs daily at 7 a.m. from Café Dada in Ternes, all year, according to the listing. Its two houses are a family winery and Nicolas Feuillatte, plus Reims Cathedral and Hautvillers, which keeps it clear of the Reims closures. It is also the cheapest day trip from Paris.

Most other listings name a famous house only as an example and swap it for whichever house is open. That is usually fine in winter, as long as you do not book for one specific label. The 8-tastings day with lunch needs at least four travellers to run, and can be cancelled with an alternative or refund on a quiet date, so book with free cancellation and keep your options open.

What should you wear for a Champagne cellar visit in winter?

Warm layers, a coat for the vineyard stops and shoes with grip. Cellars sit at about 8 to 12°C, and the outdoor stops are colder in December.

Taittinger gives 8 to 12°C for its cellars; the 8-tastings listing says about 10°C and damp. In winter the cellar can feel warmer than the street. Pommery's visit starts down a staircase of 116 steps to galleries about 30 metres underground, per Reims Tourisme, and the steps can be wet.

On a tour, the vineyard stops are outdoors and the paths get muddy after rain. Bring gloves and a hat if you want to walk the rows. It is dark by about 5 p.m. in December, so the drive back is in the dark; most groups sleep. The Comité Champagne says the region can be visited in any season with a warm layer, and that matches what guests report.

Daily departures all year, six glasses at two houses, and a heated minibus between the stops.

Frequently asked questions

Is Veuve Clicquot open in December 2026?

Yes, Wednesday to Sunday from 09:30 to 17:30 until 29 December 2026, by reservation. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Dates after 29 December are not yet published.

Is Mumm open in January 2027?

From 15 January to 28 February 2027, Mumm opens Thursday to Saturday. Nothing is listed for 22 December to 14 January, so do not plan on Mumm in that gap.

Which Champagne houses are open on Christmas Day?

Pommery is closed on 25 December and Mumm lists no hours from 22 December to 14 January. Veuve Clicquot's schedule covers Wednesday to Sunday until 29 December, and 25 December 2026 is a Friday, but check its booking calendar. Our advice: pick another date.

Is it worth visiting Champagne in winter?

Yes, if you plan around the closed days. The cellars are the same in any season, the houses are quieter and tours from Paris still run. You lose the green vines and the long evenings.
